The very first song the band ever wrote, "Dark Lantern" has gone through a slew of different names and structures. Like "Amphibian", "Dark Lantern" had the combination of separate parts where heavy met melodic, but the song was restructured to fit a more commercial ideal.
lyrics
In a brisk magnetic field
The iron man had dreamed
That the midas touch had turned him to gold
Inside he would never change
Sentiment to cut so deep
But he hardly made a dent
He was a lantern with a shutter device
To dark for his intent
I hold this beckoning beacon
A stab in the dark, a stab in the dark
With a ring of endless light
You missed the mark, how could you be
So blind
To the lantern that he shines on you
Through the shutters of his heart (Shutters of his heart)
A dark lantern's never too far
How could you be so blind?
So he fled to the underground
In malcontent, disgust
The blood and iron draining from his veins
And turned him into rust
Called to be the salt and the light
With the torch passed on to him
If they could see him now, they'd snuff it right out
The flame had grown so dim
I hold this beckoning beacon
A stab in the dark, a stab in the dark
With a ring of endless light
You missed the mark, how could you be
So blind
To the lantern that he shines on you
Through the shutters of his heart (Shutters of his heart)
A dark lantern's never too far
How could you be so blind?
A stab in the dark, a stab in the dark
With a ring of endless light
You missed the mark, how could you be
So blind
To the lantern that he shines on you
Through the shutters of his heart (Shutters of his heart)
A dark lantern's never too far
How could you be so blind?
